my wife is a loser…..?
to make a long story short. i,v been married for three years. i discovered my wife has a gambling problem, (i think an eating problem to) she never has any money for the bills yet she works 2 jobs. she refuses to talk about anything. i would divorce her today but we have a child. thank god we don’t have any joint accounts. she tried hard to get me to do that but everything is in my name.(house, cars, furniture) i can live in the same house with her, but im wondering if i should divorce her to protect myself financially. or is that even necessary. should i just stick it out until my daughter is 18? will just being married to her give her any rights to to my retirement funds?
im not in love with her so its easy for me to live with her for my daughters sake
Let her know that you two must have open communication about money, spending habits, and your future. If there are some of the problems you suspect you might have to have help from the outside such as your pastor, a counselor, treatment center, or perhaps a mentor couple. I had a friend who was in deep last year with gambling also. She did the video lottery thing and even began doing some online somehow. She was over $14,000 in debt that her hubby did not know. He found out and was devastated. They have two small children. They refinanced their home, borrowed some money from an uncle, and got the debt paid off. She had even taken a car title loan at a very high interest rate. Anyway, she is much better now. She says their marriage is much better and she has learned to trust him more. It was really hard for them for a long time. I still occasionally ask if she is gambling, because as a friend I must keep her accountable. I guess I am trying to say, that marriage is commitment. People make mistakes that you must forgive one another for, even when it is hard. They are all better off for the experience and the marriage is stronger because of what they went through. Stress that she must be honest with you, and it will get better. Incidentally, love is a choice. Love your wife friend! You might look back on this in a few years a be able to help others. Good luck.

Should I go to my sister’s wedding?
Here is the story …
Nearly 20 years ago I left my hometown in the midwest and moved to the east coast, where I married and had 2 children. I have 2 younger half-sisters, now aged 45 & 46, who have always lived back in the midwest with my mother and basically never worked or contributed. We have never been close despite my best efforts.
The 46 year old sister “borrowed” substantial sums of money from both grandparents and bankrupted my mother twice due to a gambling problem. She has also lied a great deal over the years.
About two years ago the 46 yr old sister had a change. She got a job and met a nice man whom she is now marrying. The wedding has been in the planning stages now for about FOUR WEEKS.
In March I lost my job. I have been divorced now for 3 years & am struggling to make ends meet (w/ never any assistance from family). I cannot afford to attend this wedding yet am getting the guilt trip right & left. Do I have an obligation to attend this wedding?

First of all I just wanted to send some (((HUGS))) your way today! I am so sorry to hear that you are struggling to make ends meet,believe it or not,my family and I are in the same boat too! We have to stick to a VERY STRICT BUDGET,just to make it from one month to the next!
I may get flamed for saying how I feel about this,but here it goes: Anyone with any kind of addiction no matter what it is gambling,drug,alcohol,etc will never WAKE UP and realize that they are an addict and they are hurting their family. I have seen people who have been married to gambling addicts and the gambling addict tries to justify their addiction by saying,”Well,if I win this jackpot or that jackpot,I will be set for the rest of my life and I will never have to work again.”
The sad part is that until the family or friends of the addict hold that person accountable and tell them like it is,they will NEVER STOP their destructive behavior no matter what anybody else says. Family and Friends of known addicts HAVE TO UNITE and refuse to give the addict any money whatsoever! I know that this may sound really mean and cruel,but sometimes people need to get out of,”Fantasy Land,”and get back to reality and take care of themselves on their own. If these addicts gamble away all of their own money and not the family’s money or money that their friends lent them,then it won’t be too long before the addict gets hungry and wants to eat or have a place to stay. The addict can’t afford to rent or buy a place or get food to eat if they are gambling away all of their money.
I think that it is ridiculous that any parent would knowingly contribute to an addicts behavior by giving them money for gambling,drugs,alchohol or whatever. Personally,since you were treated like dirt by these people,I wouldn’t even bother going to the wedding if I were you! Why should you? Just to get treated like dirt again?
It amazes me how family members will ignore someone in the family until they want something,then they know you all of a sudden,like it is a miracle or something that they can call you or write you a letter inviting you to a special occasion.
My half-sister got married and I didn’t go to her wedding because she never came to my wedding. Plus,I don’t like being around a bunch of phoney people who only know me when it is convenient for them,so it will make them look good by me being there! In my honest opinon if I were you,no matter how many guilt trips your family tries to give you,I would not go to that wedding no matter what! You have a right to be happy in your own life,and if you let toxic people walk all over you constantly like a doormat,they will keep doing it until you stand up for yourself and say,”Enough is Enough,”and put a stop to it! I know it sounds like a really scary thing to do to stand up to your family and say,”no,”but you will be so much happier if you stick up for yourself and do what is right,trust me!
