Gambling – are you always given your bet back on top of your winnings?
If you make a bet in some kind of gambling and you win, are you usually given your bet back on top of your winnings? Do the rules vary in casinos/betting shops/horse racing etc.?
For instance if i bet £10 on odds 3/1 i win £30 but then do i get my £10 bet back as well?

As someone else suggested, yes – it varies between different styles of wagers. The “3 to 1″ as opposed to “3 FOR 1″ is typically seen on the craps tables in Vegas. The one’s that say “for 1″ are ripping you off.
Lottery tickets and horse races are other examples where what you get it what you get. When you cash in a £2 horse winner, if the winning ticket pays £10 for a £2 wager, then you get £10. That means you received 4 to 1 on your money, (£8 profit which is 4 times £2, PLUS your £2 bet), but that’s not the way they list it for the prizes. They just list it as £10. Lottery tickets or raffle tickets are the same thing. If the prize is £50, then you get £50. Nobody is ever going to wonder how much they paid for the lottery ticket.

Do you think it’s a ripoff? The rules say your chance of getting a call back are one in ten, and then if you have the right answer you will win the jackpot. Yet they dragged the last question out over a couple different commercial breaks; I assume they were just letting the .99c calls rack up by the thousands, and your odds of winning are closer to playing the lottery. Could one not actually spend mega bucks every night trying to win? Do you think these tactics are border-line illegal (gambling or illegal lotto)? Did you call? How many times? [We probably entered, for free, a hundred times on-line, and got no call backs, 1 in 10 odds?] What do you think?
It is beats listening to those stupid infomercials on at that time of night. It is somewhat humorous as to how stupid some of the puzzles are, but I guess they need to have some easy ones for the less knowledgeable. We played along and managed to get 2 calls back 1 night & 3 calls back on the 2nd night using the internet. So this way it didn’t cost us anything. I would still say that I think even .99 is pretty cheap for the return and your odds of winning is no different then If you went and threw it away playing Bingo at a casino. I would even think it would be better then throwing your money away on a slot machine. I don’t know about the illegal part , but why ruin fun for all those that can’t sleep at night. Just think you burn money every day you put gas in your car or someone elses car & go somewhere and even then you don’t always get a return on that.
